Night of the Marvelous Moon

Join us for a night of marveling at the Moon, on Kitt Peak!

Get a close up view of our nearest celestial neighbor! This 4 hour program begins about 1 hour before sunset. Your program guide will serve as a tour guide of the Lunar surface, bringing seemingly dull craters, maria, and mountains to life!  After dark you will observe the Moon in great detail, and learn to identify surface features on The Moon.  You’ll take multiple looks at the Moon, at different magnifications.

This program is intended for guests age 14 and older who have an avid interest in the Moon.  The smaller group size of ten or fewer enables you to have extensive interaction with your guide, and experience more views through the eyepiece.

A group orientation and light supper begins the evening and is followed by sunset viewing. You will join in with any Nightly Observing Program participants for this first portion of the evening.  However, following sunset, you and other Night of the Marvelous Moon program participants will proceed to a separate telescope dome, apart from the larger crowd. The first hour after sunset will be spent learning about the Moon, and surface features that can be identified either naked-eye or with a telescope. The last hour of the program will be spent observing the Moon.

This program is held on select nights at the Visitor Center on Kitt Peak. The weather on Kitt Peak is approximately 10 – 20 degrees cooler than in Tucson. You will want to wear layers.  A large portion of this program is outdoors or in a telescope dome, which is not heated.  This dome is not wheelchair accessible.
